"The endurance and decline of the Portuguese Communist Party: ecological correlates of aggregate support since 1975"
Abstract:
Once considered as one of the few communist parties in Western Europe that survived the events of 1989 and managed to attain a steadiest electoral support and parliamentary representation in the following years, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) is now in a sharp electoral decline. This study traces and explains the correlates of aggregate support of the PCP between 1975 and 2022. Using a time-series cross-sectional (TSCS) research design to investigate the correlates of aggregate support of the PCP in legislative elections we find that its success is strongly rooted in supply-side factors and weakly rooted in demandside factors. Our findings suggest that most of the fall of support for PCP is correlated with an increase in party competition from social democratic parties and radical-left parties.
