"Stolen: what happens when the human remains stolen by fellow anthropologists a century ago are your own ancestors?"

This talk concerns the skulls of ancestors stolen from Inishbofin Island in Ireland in 1890 by famed British ethnologist Alfred Court Haddon during a time when anthropometry was regularly practiced. Vail explores the history of anthropology from both the personal and professional standpoint.

Carlos Gaspar é investigador integrado do Instituto Português de Relações Internacionais (IPRI NOVA). Nasceu em Lisboa, em 11 de Outubro de 1950. Estudou Direito e História na Universidade Clássica de Lisboa, fez o Mestrado de Ciências Políticas e Relações Internacionais no Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris e é doutorado em História e Relações Internacionais pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Foi Conselheiro dos Presidentes Ramalho Eanes, Mário Soares e Jorge Sampaio. Assessor do Conselho de Administração da Fundação Oriente e do Instituto de Defesa Nacional.

"How do governments respond to, manage and use public opinion when they negotiate at the international level? Drawing on a novel database of video recordings of public deliberations as well as voting records of national governments in the Council of the European Union, we present the most comprehensive analysis of the role public opinion plays in international negotiations to date.

Law in Global History: Towards a Decentered approach to the History of Law

The field of global history has become an increasingly consolidated field in historical research over the past two decades. It has opened the possibility of exploring a wide range of new issues as well as rethinking many assumptions that derived from nation-centered or Eurocentric narratives. The deconstructive approach that drives much global historical research, however, has not been applied to questioning the ethnocentric conceptions of law. This lack of attention ultimately risks reintroducing Eurocentric narratives through the back door.
