Rui A. P. Perdigão
Rui A. P. Perdigão is chair professor in Physics of Complex Systems and Climate Dynamics, interuniversity chair in Fluid Dynamical Systems, executive and professorial chair of the Meteoceanics Institute for Complex System Science (MICSS) and director of the associated Doctoral School, where he heads a large ecclectic set of international academic and research programs. Moreover, Prof. Perdigão serves as Editor in international scientific journals including the EGU journal Earth System Dynamics (ESD) and sits at scientific councils and advisory panels from diverse international research and funding institutions. More recently (2020), Rui Perdigão was elected corresponding member of the prestigious Academy of Sciences in Lisbon, thereby joining the class of Sciences, section of Physics.
At the Universidade de Lisboa, Prof. Perdigão represents the research group CCIAM (Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Modelling) from the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes, and has also joined forces with the Physics of Information and Quantum Technologies group from Instituto de Telecomunicações, at Instituto Superior Técnico.
Moreover, he collaborates with the Doctoral Program on Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies, an interdisciplinary doctorate promoted primarily by the Universidade de Lisboa and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. There, he coordinates and delivers some of his courses on Complex System Dynamics and on Interdisciplinary Data Analytics and Model Design, which he tailored to a broad audience beyond the natural and exact science frontiers, being deployed not only to engineering and natural science students but also to those coming from social sciences, economics and management. Moreover, he is involved in doctoral thesis supervision, coordinating doctoral research in interdisciplinary problems spanning climate system dynamics and socio-environmental complexity. Stemming from the academic and scientific links to the latter program, he also became associated to the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa, where he also lectures and mentors doctoral students.
Overall, Prof. Perdigão promotes and conducts fundamental research in complex system dynamics across frontier natural, technical and social sciences, along with theoretical information physics, coevolutionary complexity, and causality, ranging from quantum to cosmological scales passing through the intricacies of coevolutionary multi domain multiscale complexity across the geophysical and socio-environmental dynamics in the Earth system. His theoretical and methodological breakthroughs then come into innovative down-to-earth use in the development of advanced analytics, modelling and decision support frameworks for the institutions entrusted with the protection of our society and the environment.
Prof. Perdigão is also author and co-author of multiple international publications including in Nature and Science, author of several extensive academic and research monographs (books), presenter of dozens of invited keynote talks and seminars at international venues, several other oral communications at international conferences, and over a hundred other contributions. Moreover, he has convened international conference sessions at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and European Geosciences Union (EGU) for several years and has integrated large-scale international scientific networks leading to interactions with over 270 co-authors in journal publications.
Since the inception of his professorial chair and institute, he has introduced leading international MR Flagship programs nurturing large-scale high-risk high-impact projects, ranging from fundamental research in Mathematical Physics and Complexity to Synergistic Dynamics across the interdisciplinary interface among frontier natural, social and technical sciences, innovating from theory to practice to empower societies with frontier science. Empowering people with knowledgeable choices to make their own informed decisions in a complex coevolutionary world.
