O próximo Seminário de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Psicologia Social será no dia 7 de março, a partir das 14h30. Mariana Miranda (ISPA) será a oradora para esta sessão sobre o tema Social Clinical Psychology: Contributions for the study of racialised relations.

Steering scientific advances may rely on the exploration of the intersections between different knowledge(s): between (sub)disciplines, and between distinct knowledge systems. In this presentation we align with this innovative approach to tackle one of the most pressing issues in post-colonial societies: racialized relations.

We use as a starting point the numerous accounts coming the clinical setting of difficulties in working through the pervasive nature of systemic racism. We focus, specifically, on its reproduction as a norm within oppressed racialised groups, in what is called colonial mentality. In Study 1 (n = 226 Black adults), we explore the consequences of colonial mentality, identifying mediators that have been used in both clinical and social intervention models. In Study 2, we included 88 dyads from two generations of each family, with results replicating the negative effect of colonial mentality in Black people and additionally allowing for identification of family processes and identity-based moderators that can orient social-clinical interventions.

In the last part of this presentation, we put forward a new conceptualization and operationalization of racism with White populations. The CMS-W is based on the concept of colonial mentality, and, thus, bringing the perspective of racialized people to the forefront of the debate.
