Rising from the ashes – What explains innovation in a conservative collective bargaining setting?
Raquel Rego

The Literature shows that collective bargaining (CB) has a positive impact on wages, thus contributing to social justice. In addition, it shows that, during the financial crisis, neoliberal policies undermined CB in particular in Southern European Countries, leading to a sharp drop in negotiations and contributing to workers’ impoverishment. Although non-wage topics are also negotiated, they seem to be neglected by research. Based on a survey addressed to all Portuguese trade unions and employers associations, in 2021, we contribute to explain innovative behavior in CB, helping to identify the best ‘nutrients’ for a positive change and a resilient CB. A Principal Component Analysis organizes the diversity of organizations by their nature and a Multiple Linear Regression indicates that organisations oriented toward mobilisation explain the negotiation of progressive topics, covering outsiders.
