Abstract:
Despite formally living in a post-colonial era; the colonial past is embedded in the present through the coloniality of knowledge. Although decolonial research agendas received growing attention; their impact on social psychology scholarship is still quite limited. Decolonial research requires a situated approach; considering interwoven dynamics; and the ability to translate knowledge among different and power-differentiated groups. Migrants; as they navigate in-between different worlds; can play a vital role in decoloniality processes. Migration increases contact between people from different cultural backgrounds; which intensifies the process of social comparison; contributing to the construction of social identities. However; this process also entails the delineation of borders of belonging and exclusion between different groups. In this talk; after a brief contextualisation on historical cognition; migrations and decolonial activisms; I will give an overview of the studies on social representations of colonialism conducted in several Portuguese-speaking countries. Then; I will briefly discuss recent studies recently conducted in secondary schools in Mozambique and Portugal; about the representations of the colonial past; the present-day challenges and the future.
