To Resume/Reprendre: Urban Futures in the Era of the Congolese Anthropocene
Filip de Boeck (University of Leuven)

No dia 2 de junho, o workshop To Resume/Reprendre: Urban Futures in the Era of the Congolese Anthropocene terá lugar a partir das 18h, no Auditório Sedas Nunes do ICS-ULisboa e online. O evento é organizado pelo Urban Transitions Hub, no âmbito da Summer School Inhabiting the surrounds. Filip de Boeck (University of Leuven) será o orador.

In this contribution Filip De Boeck explores the ways in which the deathscapes of generalized violence in cities such as Kinshasa from environmental degradation, extreme poverty, infrastructural and welfare failure, and abuses of power, are negotiated by the dispossessed. Flights of fancy, faith and magic, along with death cults and make/shift vernaculars somehow undo the future of finality, their foregoing still a deprivation, yet also a means of coming back, of resuming in defiance of death. Building on Congolese philosopher Valentin Yves Mudimbe’s notion of reprendre (‘to resume’), De Boeck explores what kinds of urban futures might still be possible for Kinshasa, and how new forms of ‘in-commoning’ and living together might emerge through the city’s reconnection with the deep eco-time of the Congo River.
