Abstract:

Based upon the recent book by the speaker and the late Trevor Burnard, Republic and Empire: Crisis, Revolution and America’s Early Independence. It offers new perspectives on the America Revolution.  It does not tell the familiar national story of the revolution.  It instead sets the revolution in the context of Britain’s other colonies: Canada, the British Caribbean, Ireland, Gibraltar, the Channel Islands, India, Senegal and Australia.  It argues that the study can tell use a great deal about the revolution by offering a more coherent overview of British policy towards America before 1776, by helping to  prioritize competing explanations of the revolution, by helping to explain the reasons for the British defeat, by placing slavery and indigenous people in a comparative framework. Finally, it considers the impact of the revolution for the British Empire. It is virtually the first attempt to offer an imperial history of the revolution.
