O Simpósio "Modalidades de Resistência nos Impérios Ibéricos" decorrerá no ICS, nos dias 9 e 10 de Fevereiro, no Auditório Sedas Nunes.
Este Simpósio decorre no âmbito do projecto RESISTANCE
O projeto RESISTANCE aborda questões relacionadas com as desigualdades económicas, exclusão social, discriminação contra minorias, resistência cultural e disrupção da coesão social, através do estudo de processos de resistência por atores sociais e institucionais que foram historicamente desfavorecidos, discriminados e dominados. Enraizado no campo disciplinar da história, o projeto RESISTANCE procura utilizar o passado como laboratório para a observação e análise de complexos processos de resistência e dinâmicas de conflito, permitindo o pensamento crítico dos conflitos atuais nas sociedades multiculturais europeias.
O VI Simpósio tem como finalidade reunir investigadores que trabalhem sobre pessoas oriundas dos “grupos de baixo” e a sua atuação na transformação da sociedade. Pretende-se colocar em diálogo pesquisas que explorem a ação que essas pessoas desenvolveram através de diferentes modalidades de participação política e mediante práticas quotidianas de resistência, as quais, muitas vezes, acabavam por erodir as estruturas sociais e políticas. Estas modalidades de resistência eram por vezes rotineiras e subterrâneas, outras vezes expressavam-se no contexto de práticas institucionais, esgrimindo argumentos que não passavam necessariamente pelo recurso à violência física, e envolvendo, frequentemente, poucas pessoas. Ambas são importantes para estudar a emergência de novas formas de imaginação política e social, compreender o grau de tensão e de conflitualidade social que se exprimiu em situações quotidianas e discutir em que medida é que esse magma de descontentamento poderá ter contribuído para a erupção de eventos violentos, geradores de transformações mais sistémicas.

RESISTANCE is a project that addresses issues related to economic inequalities, social exclusion, discrimination against minorities, cultural resistance and disruption of social cohesion through the study of processes of resistance by social and institutional actors who have been historically disadvantaged, discriminated against and dominated. A project in History, RESISTANCE seeks to use the past as a laboratory for the observation and analysis of complex processes of resistance and dynamics of conflict, allowing the critical thinking of current conflicts in our European multicultural societies.
Led by the University of Évora, RESISTANCE is constituted by six other European academic institutions (in Portugal, Spain and Germany) and six non-European universities (in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mexico, and the USA). This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No 778076.
The VI Symposium: Varieties of Resistance Across the Iberian Empires intends to bring together scholars that study the “people from below” and focus on their role in social change. Its aim is foster a dialogue between researchers studying individuals and groups that resisted through different modalities of political participation and everyday resistance. These forms of resistance frequently ended up eroding social and political structures. Sometimes, they were quotidian and concealed; others, they were carried out in the context of institutional practices, using arguments conveyed through peaceful means, usually involving few people. These forms of resistance are relevant to study the emergence of new forms of political and social imagination. They are also crucial to understand the tensions and social conflict expressed in daily situations. Finally, they help us to understand how this magma of discontentment contributed to violent forms of resistance, some of them leading to major changes in society.
