Measuring and Comparing Affective Polarization Accross the (Democratic) World

No dia 14 de fevereiro, Andres Reiljan (European University Institute) será o orador do Seminário de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Ciência Política. O tema será Measuring and Comparing Affective Polarization Accross the (Democratic) World. A partir das 14h30, na Sala 1 do ICS-ULisboa e online.

Over the last decade, affective polarization has become one of the central themes in political science literature. Nevertheless, only a handful of studies have focused on a broad cross-national comparison of the levels of affective polarization. This talk explores which countries are most and least affectively polarized and how the answer to this question depends on the measurement approach, especially in multiparty context. The presentation will also zoom in on the extent and foundations of the intense hostility between far-right populist parties and the rest of the partisan field, which is the most polarized affective dimension in contemporary Western democracies.

Andres Reiljan is a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. He earned his PhD in Political and Social Sciences from the EUI in 2021, and holds MA and BA degrees from the University of Tartu. Andres’s research is primarily focused on affective polarization in contemporary politics, but he has also worked extensively on voting advice applications and methods of party positioning. His articles have been published in journals such as American Political Science Review, Journal of European Public Policy, European Journal of Political Research and Party Politics.
