Abstract: The last decades have seen striking progress in girls’ education and females are now doing as well as or better than males on numerous indicators. Paradoxically, the gender hierarchy in higher education remains. Indeed, female students, compared to male students, are still underrepresented in the fields of education leading to the more "profitable" professional careers - whether this profitability is measured in terms of salary, power or prestige. Drawing on previous works that have highlighted the role of gender stereotypes in the rationalization and reinforcement of gender disparities, we present recent research to demonstrate that the abilities and personality traits ascribed to female and male students could serve to justify and maintain the gender gap in higher education.
