Factors that Impact High School Track Recommendations

No dia 14 de novembro, Mafalda Mascarenhas (ICS-ULisboa: LISP PhD Program in Social Psychology) será a oradora convidada do Seminário do Grupo de Investigação SPARC. O tema para esta sessão será Factors that Impact High School Track Recommendations. A partir das 14h30 na Sala 2 do ICS-ULisboa e online.

Black students are twice more likely to be in professional education than White students in Portugal (Seabra et al., 2016). To understand what are the factors that impact high school track recommendations, we ran an experimental study (N=160). We created twenty student profiles and manipulated GPA, motivation, positive, and negative behavior. We presented these profiles to participants and asked them to make a high school track recommendation. We found that all factors manipulated influenced recommendations, but GPA and motivation had the most impact. This design will allow us to test how other factors (including race of the student) might impact high school track recommendations.

Mafalda F. Mascarenhas is a doctoral candidate in Social Psychology at Faculdade de Psicologia and ICS-UL and a visiting student at University College London. Her PhD, funded by FCT, looks at the bias in teachers’ recommendations of high school tracks for White and Black students. She is interested in applying Social Cognition to education.
