The exhibition "Movements: Revolution, Circulation, Borders," proposes a comprehensive analysis of the circulation of people, ideas, and things in Portugal over the last five decades. The exhibition proposes to immerse visitors in a sensory landscape composed of images, words, sounds, and objects, engaging them in exploring the country as a space of transit, permanence and distinction, marked by multifaceted borders. Reflecting on the impact of the Portuguese Revolution, delineating its emergence, consolidation, and metamorphoses, resonates as an invitation to a collective discussion on how the Revolution intersected the country’s identity as port of arrival and departure and place of dwelling. Thus, this exhibition contributes to unravel the intricate relationships between the transition to democracy, the nuances of circulations, and the mutable nature of contemporary political, cultural, and sensorial borders. Drawing on materials collected during empirical research along with archival material (film, photography, objects, sound), the exhibition integrates visual and sound installations, displays of objects and photographs, and film projections.

There is as much that is unique and particular in the migratory experience as there is that is common and shared. In this roundtable, the aim is to listen, think, and imagine the effects of human movement through first-hand narratives. We have invited a group of people whose journeys around the world have, at this moment, converged in Portugal, to share their life experiences and how they creatively deal with the extraordinary nature of human movement and the formal and informal mechanisms that shape it. Giving prominence to their voices on International Migrants Day has three objectives: to soften the ‘noise’ created by the mediation of their stories through political, media, and scientific discourse; to explore the potential of records centred on everyday life to establish new forms of identification and proximity; and to promote the originality and agency inherent in each trajectory. This dialogue is preceded by two descriptive narrative landscapes: one resulting from the research conducted at the University of Lisbon on the topic of contemporary migrations, and the other produced and disseminated by the Portuguese media.

Food is one of the most productive human practices through which to examine the encounters, continuities, and transformations that movement inscribes in everyday life. In this workshop, three teams of cooks from different backgrounds will cook together, sharing techniques, stories, and ways of doing that reveal how food circulates, adapts, and acquires new meanings in migratory contexts. We will engage in dialogue about culinary practices, sensory experiences, and affective memories, and explore how familiar ingredients take on distinct significations in other spaces and places. The gathering culminates in a collective dinner that celebrates conviviality, exchange, and the narrative plurality of migrant experiences.
