In this engaging session, we will trace the evolution of Democratic Innovations across Europe—from the mid-20th century to today—drawing on an extensive review of the academic literature, empirical data, and the newly developed INCITE-DEM database and timeline of DIs.

We’ll explore how participatory tools such as deliberative mini-publics, participatory budgeting, and other collaborative governance mechanisms have shaped democratic practice. Particular attention will be paid to how these innovations intersect with social and environmental sustainability, offering both opportunities and challenges for transformative democratic change.
