"Dealing with Belgium's colonial past: Social representations of history through generations and social identities"

Abstract: Controversies about the legacies of colonialism have been taking place in former colonial European countries for several decades. They reached a peak in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement in spring 2020 and are still ongoing. In this talk, I will present an overview of about 20 years of research on social representations of colonial history, mainly concerning Belgian colonialism in the Congo. I will focus on the content and structure of these representations, how they relate to social identities and group-based emotions, and how they interfere with intergroup relations and acculturation processes.
