Critter connect: Wearable sensory technology for more entangled multispecies relationships

Critter Connect is a wearable device that fosters the emergence of multispecies relationships anchored in specific ecosystems through geolocation and sensory stimuli. Drawing on posthuman theories and More-than-human geography, Critter Connect reconfigures the relationship between humans and other beings by facilitating direct, place-specific, sensory-rich interactions. We will present the design process leading to the design of the wearable and the choices made to emphasize multispecies attunement, followed by the preliminary pilot findings highlighting Critter Connect’s potential to expand engagement with more-than-humans, advocating for more spontaneous and embodied multispecies relationships anchored in territories and reflecting on the implications of multispecies entanglement in HCI.

'Mathilde Gouin holds an MA in Visual Communication from Intuit Lab, Paris and an MA in Sustainable Design from the University of Brighton. Outside of Academia, Mathilde worked as a designer in social innovation to bring more innovation and human-centred approaches to UK policymaking. Mathilde is also a PhD candidate in Digital Media at the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. Her research answers the theoretical shift in Human-Computer Interaction calling for better involvement of More-than-Human perspectives in design and research processes by developing new human and More-than-Human collaborative methods and technologies with communities living in ecosystems at risk. Mathilde builds on multidisciplinary practices, expert engagement, and community co-design approaches to address specific ecological challenges while fostering multispecies imaginaries for sustainable futures, supporting new ways of engaging with More-than-Human more equitably.
