Conferência ICS 2026: Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sphere.
The annual ICS Conference, titled Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sphere, will take place next thursday, 9th July, at ICS-ULisbon, in Sedas Nunes Auditorium, from 10am to 5pm. The conference will be broadcast on the ICS YouTube channel here
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the public sphere. In this conference, we bring together scholars, policymakers and practitioners to examine two aspects of this transformation. On the one hand, how AI is changing the ways governments make decisions and are held accountable for them. On the other, how AI is changing the production and sharing of knowledge, as well as the ways futures are imagined.
The morning focuses on AI in the public sector, asking how algorithmic systems affect public administration, political decision-making, and democratic legitimacy. The afternoon broadens the lens to a discussion of our sociodigital futures, exploring how AI reconfigures knowledge, power, and everyday practices.
Across two keynote lectures and two interdisciplinary panels, we draw on contributions from a variety of disciplines: political science, sociology, law, philosophy, science and technology studies, and AI research. Our aim is not only to understand the promises and risks of AI from a social scientific perspective, but also to reflect on the institutions, forms of expertise, and modes of participation through which its futures are being governed and imagined.
