Communicating science through laughter: a Portuguese project about stand-up comedy on science
Sofia Guedes Vaz
No âmbitos dos Seminários de Almoço ICS decorre dia 7 de Fevereiro às 13:30 na Sala de Aulas 2 (piso 0) do ICS a sessão com o tema Communicating science through laughter: a Portuguese project about stand-up comedy on science por Sofia Guedes Vaz, investigadora no CENSE (FCT/UNL).

Summary: The project described in this presentation is entitled "Cientistas de Pé" and was originally planned to integrate the representation events of the Portuguese European Researchers' Night in 2009. After several successful presentations in 2009, this project evolved to second and third editions, with the most recent one focusing on environmental issues (with funds from an environmental national prize). Each edition had a group of 7-8 scientists, and in total (3 editions)13 scientists working in eight different areas (biochemistry, bioinformatics, biology, agronomy, environmental engineering, archaeology, sociology, communication sciences) already participated in the project, thus bringing a diversity of expertise that enabled to explore a varied array of scientific issues.
Each performance is planned to have the duration of approximately one hour with pieces of six/seven scientists. Its main purpose is entertaining and making people smile, laugh or feel-well, whilst trying to fulfill other objectives of science communication, namely to increase awareness about the issues involved, to provide information about those issues, to promote learning or curiosity, and above all, to transmit the idea of science and of scientists as something one can laugh at. The overall objective is that audiences become more receptive to science in general while learning and laughing at the same time. In this presentation, I will describe the project and the process of conceptualizing and building up a stand-up comedy show on science.
