Limited consultation time has been linked to a myriad of adverse consequences, including impaired patient-provider communication, diminished patient satisfaction, eroded trust in healthcare providers and the healthcare system, and an increased risk of malpractice claims against physicians. While limited consultation time impacts many patients regardless of their sociodemographic characteristics, significant disparities in the duration of medical consultations have been documented across races. Specifically, Black patients frequently experience shorter face-to-face interactions with non-Black healthcare providers, as compared to their White counterparts. This presentation highlights findings from my recent cross-cultural investigation on disparities in time investment (i.e., the Intergroup Time Bias effect) in healthcare and their association with healthcare providers’ implicit and explicit racial biases. Additionally, it situates these findings within the Clinical and Translational Science Framework, illustrating their broader implications for healthcare equity and policy.

Emerson Do Bú is a Junior Researcher at ISCTE-IUL and an Associated Researcher at ICS-ULisbon. He earned his PhD in Social Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology, University of Lisbon and later served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on the intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics of intergroup bias in healthcare settings, with a particular interest in the subtle manifestations of discrimination in intergroup relations.
