Genetic belonging, citizenship and mixed nations in Latin America

All over Latin America, geneticists are exploring the genetic profiles of mestizo (mixed) populations, and defining them in terms of African, Amerindian and European "genetic ancestries". Their aims are mainly related to medical agendas, but in the process they produce representations of the nation and its composition in ethnic, or one might say "racial," terms (although the geneticists now reject that term).  Some geneticists also make explicit statements about the nation and about social policies related to diversity.

The Heterogeneity of Capitalism in Crisis-ridden Europe

Abstract

The heterogeneity of European capitalisms seems to be one of the causes of the current crisis. Differences in terms of competitiveness and institutions are huge. With the crisis as point of departure I will analyse this heterogeneity. First, I describe the comparative (dis-)advantages of selected EU-member states. The differences are big, particularly in terms of econoic speci- alisation and innovation capacity. In the second part the paper concentrates on institutional development in the past decade.
