Disinformation and Fact-Checking: Methods and Challenges in Scientific Research

No dia 13 de março, João Pedro Baptista (Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro e CICANT) será o orador convidado do Seminário do Grupo de Investigação SPARC sobre o tema será Disinformation and Fact-Checking: Methods and Challenges in Scientific Research. A partir das 14h30, na Sala 2 do ICS-ULisboa e online [ID: 975 6636 2593, senha 124396]

The objective of this presentation is to provide a critical perspective on research into political online disinformation, addressing it from two central perspectives: the production and dissemination of disinformative content and the factors that influence its consumption and impact. In particular, the aim is to understand the ideological motives or political-party effects that guide both the spread and reception of disinformation, analyzing how pre-existing beliefs, political identities, and dynamics of polarization shape the consumption of fake news.

The research also focuses on the effectiveness of fact-checking in combating disinformation, questioning the extent to which its practices can correct misperceptions and how they are received by different audiences. In this context, the project examining the main practices and effectiveness of fact-checkers in Southern Europe will be discussed, analyzing editorial criteria, the impact of media agendas, and public attitudes toward fact-checking.

Beyond analyzing the phenomenon of disinformation, the presentation will address the methodological diversity applied in scientific research on this topic. Approaches such as content analysis and critical discourse analysis, the use of textual mining and statistical software, as well as the application of surveys and interviews, will be discussed. These methodologies allow for a broader understanding of the processes involved in the production, circulation, and reception of disinformation, contributing to the development of effective strategies to combat media manipulation and promote digital literacy.
