From a territorial to an ocean basin concept of regions: evidence from the pacific
No dia 7 de fevereiro, Santiago Olarte (ICS-ULisboa) será o orador convidado do Seminário do Grupo de Investigação RIGoP. O tema para esta sessão será From a territorial to an ocean basin concept of regions: evidence from the pacific.
In recent years, scholars have criticized the Eurocentric foundations of interregional studies and advocated for alternative regional perspectives. In line with these recent developments, this study presents an innovative framework for analyzing East Asia-Latin America relations. The increasing interactions between the two shores of the Pacific define a "transregional space” with unique characteristics that distinguish it from other types of interregional relations. To sustain this point, this work draws on insights from Critical Political Geography and the “spatial turn” in social sciences to study the formation of transregional spaces and their implications for cooperation. Additionally, an analysis of civil society networks and diasporas is integrated to understand how this new space is also shaped from the bottom. With the information collected, this study proposes to move beyond the concept of interregionalism towards that of transregionalism, contributing to a more global understanding of global interconnections.
A partir das 11h, na Sala 2 do ICS-ULisboa e online.
