The two dimensions of district magnitude in the world’s electoral systems

No dia 18 de abril, Ignacio Lago (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) será o orador convidado do Seminário do Grupo de Investigação SPARC. O tema para esta sessão será The two dimensions of district magnitude in the world’s electoral systems.

In many electoral systems worldwide, the number of seats to be allocated varies across districts. Smaller districts witness stronger incentives for district-level coordination, resulting in the formation of different party systems across districts, with larger districts having a greater number of viable parties. District magnitude not only affects the fragmentation of party systems but also their heterogeneity within countries. Drawing on original data and existing datasets, we demonstrate that this heterogeneity in district magnitude within electoral systems increases the number of parties, hampers electoral coordination over time and helps to understand how electoral systems shape income redistribution.

O evento terá lugar pelas 14h30 na Sala 2 do ICS-ULisboa e online.
