Postgraduate Studies Seminar

The Postgraduate Studies Seminar consists of a diverse group of scientific activities that are a vital part of the institutional life of the ICS as an active community of researchers. Research papers are presented by researchers from the institute and by guest researchers from other Portuguese and international universities. Seminar sessions run for two hours, divided into two periods, one for presentation and a second period for discussion, in which all are invited to take part.

Testimonials

Giulia Cavallo

“Doutorei-me em 2013 com uma tese sobre práticas terapêuticas nas igrejas Zione de Maputo, Moçambique. No Instituto de Ciências Sociais senti-me sempre acolhida, apoiada e tive todas as condições para levar a frente o meu trabalho com as ferramentas certas. A partilha entre colegas foi constante e criou laços importantes, não somente a nível profissional.“

Study at ICS

Dear students, welcome to the Instituto de Ciências Sociais.

We are heirs of a pioneer institution in the development of social sciences in Portugal, the Gabinete de Investigações Sociais, created in 1962 by Adérito Sedas Nunes and integrated into the Universidade de Lisboa in 1982, using its current name since then.

Multidisciplinary, intellectual freedom and scientific rigor have been hallmarks of ICS since the GIS era, which we highly value.

Working papers

The ICS has made two collections of social science studies available in electronic form. These are authored by its researchers, collaborators, postgraduate students and visiting researchers. The aim of both collections is to promote broader knowledge and discussion of the academic work undertaken at the ICS. These collections are a dynamic platform for the online publishing of articles in the social sciences.

Portugal's Changing Society

Portugal Social em Mudança (Portugal's Changing Society) – In 2015, the ICS launched this biennial publication with the aim of providing information on societal questions from a comparative, longitudinal and geographical perspective. "Portugal in Europe during the crisis years" was the title selected for the first issue. "Portugal, municipal portraits" was the title of the second (2017).

Responsible Research and Innovation Seminars

Following the ICS Research Meeting held on June 2015, a seminar series entitled Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) was launched in November. The purpose of the RRI seminars is to set aside time for peer discussion on ethical, legal and social issues that may jeopardize the acceptability, relevance or quality of research. These are informal monthly meetings where two researchers and/or doctoral students of ICS-ULisboa present a problem or reflection of an ethical nature.

Infrastructures

PASSDA - Collects, analyses, and archives data on social and political attitudes and behaviours, for the use of the entire research community. Coordinated by ICS, it articulates the Portuguese components of two European research infrastructures — European Social Survey-ERIC and CESSDA-ERIC — and is part of the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures.
