Specific Educational Needs

Specific Educational Needs

The Universidade de Lisboa seeks to implement an inclusion policy, actively engaging in promoting the full success and participation of Students with Specific Educational Needs (SEN Students) in academic, social, sporting and cultural life.

To achieve a fully inclusive education, ULisboa has a Support Network for Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN-ULisboa Network), which includes representatives from the 18 Schools, the Social Services (SASULisboa), the University Stadium of Lisbon (EULisboa), and students. The main objectives of the SEN Network are: identifying, disseminating, and implementing best practices; and sharing resources to improve attendance conditions and academic success for SEN students. The ICS is represented in the SEN Network by the Academic Management Service.

Granting Status

The Specific Educational Needs Student (SENS) status may be requested by students who present difficulties in the following areas:

  • Vision;
  • Hearing;
  • Motor skills;
  • Chronic illness;
  • Psychological/psychiatric;
  • Learning difficulties;
  • Other objectively limiting conditions with implications for the teaching-learning context.

Under the ULisboa SEN Student Regulation (Regulamento do Estudante NEE da ULisboa), requests for SENS status must be submitted at the beginning of the academic year to the Director of ICS-ULisboa, via the FenixEdu platform under myFenix > Services > Requisitions > Create > Requisition Type: Requisition. The request must be accompanied by a medical report issued by a specialist in the field, specifically indicating whether the disability is permanent or temporary. If the disability is permanent, the request will be considered valid for the entire period of the student's enrolment from the moment of the request onward. In the case of a temporary disability, periodic proof of the condition underlying the request must be provided.

Accessibility and Mobility at the ICS-ULisboa

The ICS-ULisboa facilities have elevators and accessible restrooms on all floors. Classrooms are located on the ground floor and are easily accessible for people with disabilities. Services ensure priority in-person assistance for students with SENS status.

Assessment

The SENS status allows for assessments to be conducted in forms or conditions appropriate to the specific needs, without questioning the correct assessment of the skills and knowledge being assessed. In the event of successive hospitalisations or prolonged absences for treatment/medication, teachers must allow assessments to be taken on alternative dates, to fall within the current academic year's calendar. Access to the Special Exam Period requires documentary evidence supporting the exception request and a favorable opinion issued by the appropriate School services.

Suspension of Deadlines

Under article 10 of the University of Lisbon's Graduate Studies Regulation (Regulamento de Estudos de Pós-Graduação da Universidade de Lisboa), it is possible to request a Suspension of Deadlines, regardless of the SENS status.

The deadlines for submitting and defending final master's and doctoral final works may be suspended by decision of the Graduate Studies Committee, upon a duly substantiated request submitted by students in the following situations:

  • Parenthood;
  • Serious and prolonged illness or serious accident of the student;
  • Caring for a family member suffering from a serious and prolonged illness;
  • Other situations provided for by law or socially acceptable.

The request must be submitted through the FenixEdu platform under myFenix > Services > Requests > Create > Requisiiton Type: Requisition.
