  • Holders of Master degrees or legal equivalent in any field in the Social Sciences and Humanities;
  • Exceptionally, holders of a bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent, holders of a relevant academic or scientific curriculum in the fileds aforementioned and that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this cycle of studies.

Applications must be submitted with the following documents:

  • Bachelor's, Master's and other academic qualifications, including academic transcripts mentioning the grades obtained;
  • Copy of the master's dissertation and, if applicable, published works;
  • Detailed curriculum vitae;
  • Research project presented according to the model in force in the calls for doctoral grants from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: title, abstract (150 words), 5 keywords, review of relevant literature (500 words), objectives (300 words ), detailed description of the methodology and tasks to be carried out (1000 words), schedule, bibliography;
  • Two letters of recommendation, explaining the context of the candidate's academic and/or professional relationship with the person who recommends him/her and considering the suitability of the candidate's profile for the thesis project proposed to be developed in the Doutoramento em Antropologia da Universidade de Lisboa;
  • Certificate of independent command of the English language at the level of written and oral comprehension, or self-assessment of English proficiency using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as a standard;
  • Letter of intent, setting out the reasons that lead the candidate to choose the PhD in Anthropology at the Universidade de Lisboa.

Selection Criteria

The applications for the PhD in Anthropology will be evaluated according to the following criteria and ponderations:

  • Academic path: 0,25
  • Personal curriculum: 0,15
  • Research plan: 0,35
  • Interview: 0,25

Each criteria is scored on a scale of 0 to 20, rounded to the integer.
The global classification, resulting from the calculations described above, will be rounded to two decimals.
The applications for which the global classification is below 14 marks are not eligible for admission in the PhD.

Selection Criteria

The applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Final grade obtained in the academic degree held by the candidate;

  • Adjustment of the candidate's academic training to the requirements of the PhD programme;
  • Research project or letter of intent and motivation;
  • Interview (if required by the Scientific Committee).

 

In 2014, the Doctoral Programme in Migrations (DeMig) earned funding approval from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, IP (FCT, IP), under the auspices of its FCT PhD Programmes.
Therefore, in accordance with the Scientific Research Scholarship Statutes and the FCT Scholarships Regulations, the Scientific Committee of the Migrations PhD Programme will grant individual scholarships for this programme.

Applications must be submitted with the following documents:

  • Certificate of Qualifications (Master's, Bachelor's and/or equivalent academic degree) and grades/academic classifications obtained;
  • Updated academic, scientific and professional curriculum, including published or duly documented work;
  • Research project (presented according to the template adopted for FCT doctoral grant calls) or, alternatively, a detailed proposal of a research theme or problem, including summary (max. 150 words) and the presentation of the theme or problem proposed for research, providing foundation for its sociological relevance (max. 1,500 words).
  • Letter of interest, detailing your motives to enrol in the PhD programme;
  • Citizenship Card or Passport (the submission of identification documents can be replaced, by the candidate's option, by in-person presentation at the institution, which will keep the elements contained therein that are relevant for registration, including identification, tax and social security numbers, as well as the validity of the respective documents).

The documents must be presented in Portuguese, English, French, Italian, or Spanish. In case the documents are in any other language, you must present the original document accompanied by an official translation into any of the described languages.

Selection Criteria

Vacancies: 15 vacancies

The applicants will be ranked according to the final classifications attributed to the applications by the Selection Jury, based on individual merit, and expressed in a scale of 0 to 20 values, taking under consideration the academic, scientific and professional curriculums, the projects, and letters of interest to follow the doctoral programme. The following criteria are considered:

  1. Holders of Master's degree, or legal equivalent, in Sociology or any other field in social sciences and humanities:
    1. The academic grade of the Master's degree (10%);
    2. The academic grade of the Bachelor's degree (10%);
    3. The global evaluation of the academic, scientific and professional curriculum (20%);
    4. The evaluation of the research project or research theme propoposal, and the letter of interest (30%);
    5. The evaluation of the interview (30%).
  2. Holders of Bachelor's degree or legal equivalent:
    1. The academic grade of the Bachelor's degree (10%);
    2. The global evaluation of the academic, scientific and professional curriculum (30%);
    3. The evaluation of the research project or research theme propoposal, and the letter of interest (30%);
    4. The evaluation of the interview (30%).
  3. Applicants that are not holders of Higher Education degrees or legal equivalent:
    1. The global evaluation of the academic, scientific and professional curriculum (40%);
    2. The evaluation of the research project or research theme propoposal, and the letter of interest (30%);
    3. The evaluation of the interview (30%).

The Selection Jury will carry out the interviews, which may, if necessary, take place via videoconference.
After evaluating the applications according to the defined criteria and weightings, the Selection Jury will rank the applications, in descending order of their final classifications.
Candidates whose final application rating is lower than 14 points will be excluded from registration in the doctoral programme.
Candidates whose final application classification is equal to or greater than 14 points and, cumulatively, whose order number in the final ranking is less than or equal to the number of vacancies fixed will be admitted to enrolment in the doctoral programme. Applications whose order number in the final ranking is higher than the number of vacancies will be placed as alternates.
Candidates placed as alternates will be admitted to enrol in the doctoral programme in any remaining vacancies after the deadline for registration, in ascending order of their order number in the final ranking.

Re-Entry

As provided for in no. 3 of article 30 of the Regulamento de Estudos de Pós-Graduação da Universidade de Lisboa, the five years of registration of the final work are non-extendable. Once the five years of registration have expired, the right to enroll expires and it will be necessary to submit a new application for the programme.
Students who interrupt their enrolment in the programme may also submit a new application to the programme.
