Vanessa Cunha is a sociologist and an assistant researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa), belonging to the LIFE Research Group. She is graduated and has a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE-IUL (1995, 2006) and has a master's degree in Social Sciences from ICS-ULisboa (2000), where she works since 1996.
She has been developing two lines of research: one on low fertility, childbearing postponement, reproductive decisions and parenting; and another on work-life balance, public policies, gender equality and masculinities. She was team member of several national and international projects, including in the project “Men's Roles in a Gender Equality Perspective” (2014-2016), developed within a partnership with CITE and funded by the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area, EEA Grants, Programme Area PT07 - Mainstreaming of Gender Equality and Work-Life Balance.
Between 2012 and 2015 she coordinated the project "The double postponement: men and women coping with childbearing intentions in their late 30s and early 40s" and currently she coordinates the project "PARENT - Childbearing and Parenting in the context of low fertility, family change and the economic crisis" (2018- 2021), both funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (PTDC/CS-SOC/121148/2010 and PTDC/SOC-SOC/29367/2017).
Presently, in addition to research activities, she is a teacher in the Inter-University PhD in Sociology OpenSoc, coordinates, with Magda Nico (CIES-IUL) and Cláudia Casimiro (CIEG/ISCSP-ULisboa), the Thematic Section Families and the Life Course of the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS), and coordinates the Observatory on Families and Family Policies (OFAP) of ICS-ULisboa. She is also a member of the management bodies of the Association for Family Planning (APF, 2017-2021).
