In early 2010 it was created the Portuguese Observatory on Families and Family Policies (OFAP), an organic structure of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa), where it is located. Its main goal is to produce and disseminate knowledge on families and family policies in Portuguese society.

The lines of action are twofold: gathering information on the evolution of family life, dynamics and forms, and their impact on the demographic patterns; and monitoring and disseminating legislation and family policies that regulate and support family life in Portugal.

Karin Wall coordinated the OFAP until 2018, and Vanessa Cunha is the current coordinator.
