National Survey on Waste and Recycling Practices, Representations and Attitudes
During 2020-2021 and by request of Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV), ICS-ULisboa has carried out a study on the practices, representations and attitudes of the Portuguese citizens towards the management of urban waste for Sociedade Ponto Verde, with a specific focus on Integrated Packaging Waste Management Systems (SIGRE). The aims of the study are: to identify different practices, attitudes and arrangements, including barriers and incentives, according to socio-economic and territorial frameworks; to assess the impact of communication plans on the practices adopted; to evaluate public perceptions on the transition stages regarding waste management in Portugal; to characterise social acceptance for new policies and planned changes such as the implementation of PAYT (pay-as-you-throw) systems, deposit-refund systems (DRS) and other systems for separate collection of specific flows (e.g. bio-waste).
The study is structured in three main phases:
- Survey of scientific studies and similar surveys, as well as media collection and analysis
- Implementation and analysis of focus groups in Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) and in Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP)
- Survey to a representative sample of the population, both at the national level and in each of the metropolitan areas
