Catholic Orientalism

This project is about the production and systematization of knowledge about Asiatic territories, peoples, and histories in the context of early-modern Catholic imperial experiences. It participates of the history of the construction of Western knowledge about «Orient» - the classical Orientalisms -, but it intends to challenge some of the variables of that big narrative, and question the place of the knowledge produced in the South of Europe on those subjects, in the period previous to 19th century. In that sense, it challenges the ways how the connections between Power and Knowledge have been discussed by literature, in what concerns, namely, their chronologies and geographies. This exercise allows us to compare different imperial experiences under a different focus than the one produced by the 19th century narratives about the Early-Modern period. We aim at identifying a double subalternization:1) The process that originated the subalternization of «oriental» knowledge by «western» knowledge - and here, the scale of analysis will be a macro scale; 2) The process of peripherization of the South by the North of Europe, and with it, of the knowledges produced in the context of Southern imperial experiences.

Objectivos:

This project aims at two types of goals: the first are epistemological, and the second historiographical:

a) This project aims at participating in the debate about the material conditions of the production of knowledge and its relations with geopolitics equilibrium (Noth/South; Occident/Third-World and soforth) and to identify the places of cultural peripherizatiom in the European historical context and the fractures that happened during the 18th and 19th centuries.

b)It aims, too, at displaying new sources of information, a new archive - and, therefore, of problematization - on the history of India in the early-modern period, the relationship between colonizer and colonized, the processes of construction of political identities, the internal orientalism, and so on.
