The mothers of Bragança

The mothers of Bragança

The project revolves around a simple sociological questioning whose basic theoretical referential system may be found in Robert Nisbet, (Social Change): what makes a unit of persistences (the "mores" of moralities, the "valences" of traditional values) be confronted by new socio-cultural currents? What effects will the globalisation of new sexuality experiences have in such a process?

Objectivos:
The research seeks to analyse the nature of the social cleavages unleashed by a disturbance of the social order. Due to the fact that a large number of the "brothel employees" have Brazilian nationality, a strong animosity was generated by the "mothers of Bragança" against the Brazilian girls, many of them immigrants in an "illegal situation". A first perverse and unexpected effect of the movement of the "mothers of Bragança" was the fact that it originated reactive movements in defence of the Brazilians. A second effect, also perverse and unexpected was such a blowing up of the mentioned conflict that it crossed borders, namely through an article in "<em>Time</em>" published in October 2003: curious individuals that come from Spain and other European countries began frequenting Bragança and enjoying the "brothel" pleasures in a traditional city that gained a place on the map of sexual tourism routes.
