INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SURVEY PROGRAMME

This project is part of the research programme "Portuguese Social Attitudes" coordinated by Manuel Villaverde Cabral and Jorge Vala.

The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) is a continuing annual programme of cross-national collaboration on surveys covering topics important for social science research. It is also the oldest and largest network of comparative and longitudinal studies, involving more than 40 countries. Portugal is a member of the network since 1997.

The ISSP in Portugal has been sponsored by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Caixa Geral de Depósitos and also by the Instituto de Ciências Sociais

The ISSP annual surveys are applied to a probabilistic sample of the adult (18 years old+) resident population of Continental Portugal.

 

Since 1997 Portugal participated in the following annual surveys:

1998 - Religion II

1999 - Social Inequality III

2001 - Environemnt II

2002 - Family and Gender III

2003 - National Identity II

2004 - Citizenship

2005 - Work Orientations III

2006 - Role of Governement IV

2007 - Leisure and Sport

2008 - Religion III

2009 - Social Inequality IV

 

Currently data from National Identity, Citizenship, and Role of Government is being analysed.

Data produced within this project is free and can be accessed in the following websites-

Data concerning the 2008 and 2009 modules will be collected this spring.

Objectivos: 
<p>The ISSP modules that are going to be carried out in 2009 have the specific objectives described below.</p><p>The new survey on <strong>Religion</strong> will allow to examine such issues as: a) whether early religious revivals in some ex-Socialist nations have been sustained; b) the role of emergent religions, especially in the US and Western Europe; c) spiritualism without religion or non-institutionalized religion; and d) cohort change over a 17-year period.</p><p> </p><p>Concerning the module on <strong>Social Inequalities</strong>, the issues that will be addressed will focus, for instance: a) perceptions of distributive mechanisms in society and subjective social mobility; b) attributed reasons for the persistence of inequalities; c) perceived and desired occupational earnings; d) ideal government action towards inequality; e) social conflict between several opposing groups in society; f) images of social inequality.</p><p> </p>
