The Left and the Wall - Ideological Continuities and Changes in the Portuguese Left Wing, Post 1989

The Left and the Wall - Ideological Continuities and Changes in the Portuguese Left Wing, Post 1989

Departing from documents analyse and from interviews with current or previous left-wing activists, with different political evolutions and members of different political groups in the 1980s, this 44 months-long project will study: 1) the ideological and emotional impact of the "perestroika" and the fall of Berlin Wall in the Portuguese left wing parties and members; 2) the ruptures and continuities, post 1989, in the political ideology and practice of those parties, and its justification, according to their members; 3) the personal views, on this subjects and on the left-wing previous practices and ideologies, of left wing activists in the 1980s, who staid in the same party, changed to/created other parties, abandon activism, or changed strongly their political position; 4) the personal and collective views about what should be the "task", ideology and practice of left wing political activism, in the present and in the future; 5) the comparison between the current organisational and personal positions and the issues that originate the separation between the 2nd and the 3rd International. The geographic scope of the project might be, in a second phase, enlarged to a European level, in partnership with other academic institutions.

Objectivos:
To understand the ruptures and continuities in the ideologies and practices of Portuguese left wing parties and activism, under the impact of the "perestroika" and the fall of Berlin Wall, both at an organisational and personal level.
- To understand the different individual evolutions of current and previous left wing activists, their reasons and current positions, and the possible impact of those reasons and positions in the future practices, priorities, ideologies or even paradigms of left wing parties and movements.
- To compare the current essential issues that divide people and groups who consider themselves "left wing" and the issues that originate main divisions in the past - as the schism between the 2nd and the 3rd International, or inside the Communist movement.
State of the art:

There is a large amount of bibliography and on-going studies about the history of Communist and Social-Democratic parties, at the international and even Portuguese level. Both are very useful to the project because, in one hand, although the project has a national scope the issues it raises are only understandable in its European and world-wide context and because, in the other hand, most of those issues have a long history or a distant origin.

However, besides books and articles written by their own actors or by political organisations (also very useful as research sources), I have no knowledge of scientific production about Portugal, on the period and issues raised by this project
