The Bank of Lisbon and the Portuguese Liberal Revolution of 1820

The Bank of Lisbon and the Portuguese Liberal Revolution of 1820

It is intended to carry out a historical study and editorial project devoted to the institution of the Bank of Lisbon (December 1821), in the context of the liberal movement of the 1820’s and the debate on the economic and financial problems that involved the first Portuguese liberal revolution, namely as concerns the management of public debt and the control of the issuance and circulation of paper money. The study will focus on the analysis of the first shareholders and directors of the Bank of Lisbon, especially with regard to their links with the business activities in the main commercial regions of the country. The study on the functions and attributions of the Bank of Lisbon will be framed in a broader perspective on the genesis of Portuguese banking institutions and their comparison with European counterparts. It will also be complemented with an anthology of contemporary texts selected according to their relevance to the economic, financial and banking history of the period under analysis. The research will be based on original sources from the Historical Archive of the Bank of Portugal and the Parliamentary Historical Archives (Constitutional Court Commissions 1821/22)
