European Social Survey - Round 10

European Social Survey - Round 10

This project will allow the continuity of Portugal in the European Social Survey-ERIC (ESS), ensuring the completion of its 10th Round and participation in the preparatory work for the 11th and 12th Round. ESS is already a reference project in Europe and Portugal. Created by the European Science Foundation, the ESS has responded exceptionally to the main objective that gave rise to its foundation in 2002: to provide rigorous indicators to measure and monitor European social attitudes. In its first decade, the ESS became a longitudinal instrument of indisputable authority and utility. It is implemented every two years and 38 countries have already participated (17 of which in the 9 Rounds so far concluded), including all EU Member States. Immediate and free access to all data and protocols will continue to be guaranteed to an increasing number of users (more than 150000 until December 2019; 3414 in Portugal, of which 383 are PhD students). The scientific output, which has already reached 4000 publications, may thus continue to grow. The ESS has been methodologically and theoretically innovative. Seeking to adapt to the difficulties felt by an increasing number of countries in maintaining high response rates, guaranteeing the quality of the samples (two of the methodological requirements of the project) and controlling the increasing costs associated with face-to-face interviews, the ESS together with 12 participating countries (including Portugal) successfully applied for the SUSTAIN-2 program with the project “Design and recruitment of a probability based CROss-National Online Survey (CRONOS) panel” (EU project 871063). CRONOS aims to conduct a set of online surveys of people who responded to the ESS10. In this way, it will be possible to create a high-quality probabilistic and transnational online panel, which will represent a novelty and a notable methodological advance in the field of surveys with probabilistic and representative samples. In addition to contributing to the mitigation of the growing problems described above, CRONOS will add a longitudinal element to the ESS for the first time. The impact of the ESS on the social sciences in Portugal fully justifies its participation in this network in the next three years. In addition to the topics covered in all rounds (e.g. interpersonal and institutional trust, attitudes towards immigration, political participation and citizenship, personal values, in addition to extensive sociodemographic characterisation), this round will focus on two very current topics: the module on Understanding and Evaluation of Democracy, applied already in 2012, aims to measure some recent changes and their implications for European democracies, namely, the emergence of new political forces that 'stormed the democratic scenario'; the impact of referendums on European democracies and the European Union; the emergence of a generation of 'outraged' young people, as a result of the various crises that have affected European democracies; the new module on Digital Social Contacts addresses some of the main changes introduced by the digitalisation of communication in professional and family life (not forgetting the particular context resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic), and aims to identify different dimensions of digital social contact (frequency, content, costs and benefits involved) to allow a greater understanding of digital phenomena and create new possibilities, from a comparative perspective between European countries, for multivariate analyses of the determinants of digital social contacts (for example, social inequalities) and their consequences, especially for the quality of relationships, the balance between professional and family life and well-being. Most participating countries also agreed to include in the ESS 10 questionnaire an additional module that will allow assessing the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of Europeans. Over almost 20 years the ESS has become a reference for teachers, researchers and opinion makers; the impact of the various seminars already organised to discuss the results of the ESS clearly demonstrates its impact on the Portuguese scientific community. The quality of the Portuguese contribution has been highlighted by the ESS Central Coordination as an example of good practice. Thus, Portugal's presence in ESS and participation in CRONOS will continue the contribution made in the last 2 decades to the development of scientific objectives in the social sciences and will allow the Portuguese social sciences community to trace and interpret stability and change in European social attitudes; increase the rigor of comparative research; create national evolution indicators, taking into account perceptions and judgments about key social aspects; train researchers in quantitative methods; increase the visibility of data on social change among academics, political actors and the general public.
