Mail control and the Post Office Reforms of Portuguese America (1796-1822)
The postal reforms in Portugal were initiated in 1796, with the reinstate of the Postmasters office to the jurisdiction of the Crown. They had two main objectives: to improve communications between Portugal and its domains, and to increase the tax intake of the Crown with the charge of the mail transportation. The object of this thesis is the post office reforms in Portuguese America in 1796-1822.
