Jussara Rowland is a sociologist working at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS), youth studies, digital transitions, and science communication. She holds a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and is currently a Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa), where she was awarded a position under the FCT Scientific Employment Stimulus Programme (CEEC) with the project “Futures in the Making: Young People, AI and the Sociotechnical Imaginaries of the ‘Future of Work’.” The project bridges the sociology of youth and STS to examine how younger generations are represented in, and make sense of, imaginaries of AI and the future of work. Jussara previously worked at INESC-ID as Auxiliary Researcher and Executive Coordinator of the Societal Digital Transformation research line. She has taught Technology and Society at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, since 2023, as an Invited Assistant Professor. Jussara is currently co-coordinator of the Sociology of Science and Technology Research Network (RN24/SSTNET) of the European Sociological Association for 2026–2028. She is a member of the coordination team of the Observatory of Changing Society (OSeM), an interdisciplinary observatory of ICS-ULisboa, and a member of the Deontological Council of the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS). In addition to university teaching, Jussara has taken part in several internationally funded research projects, including PilotSTRATEGY, CEEGS, CONCISE, and CUIDAR, as well as national FCT-funded projects. She has co-organised numerous scientific events, including the ICS Conference 2026 (“Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sphere”) and panels at the EASST, ISA and ESA conferences, and coordinated the Digital Technology & Society reading group at ICS-ULisboa.
