Cristina Sá Valentim
Cristina Sá Valentim is a social-cultural anthropologist (MA and BA, University of Coimbra) and holds a PhD in Sociology (area Postcolonial Studies, CES-University of Coimbra, FCT Fellow). She is a Research Fellow at ICS-Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (CEEC-IND, FCT, 4th Edition), and a visiting professor at the University of Coimbra. She is researching and coordinating the project Archives of Lived Songs: History, Memories and Legacies of Angolan Colonial Folk Music (1950-2020) in the Research Group Empires, Colonialism and Postcolonial Societies. She has carried out interdisciplinary research, including ethnographic and collaborative fieldwork in Angola and Portugal. In 2022 she published the book Sounds of Empire, Voices of Cipale. Cokwe songs and Memories of Forced Labour in the Lundas region, Angola (FAAN, Luanda) as the result of her PhD thesis winning the Agostinho Neto International Historical Research Prize (2019-2020 edition) organized by the Dr António Agostinho Neto Foundation (FAAN), Angola; the Afro-Brazilian Institute of Higher Education (IABES), Brazil; and UNESCO.
Her main research interests include, among others, Portuguese late colonialism, forced labour, Angolan popular music, heritage, cultural ecology, identity strategies, history of Anthropology, and digital humanities. She has been a peer-reviewer in national and international scientific journals, and an expert evaluator of academic and non-academic applications to national and international calls. In addition to scientific research, she has developed several activities related to teaching and the management and dissemination of science. She has published several articles in indexed and open-access national and international double peer-reviewed journals, and on online sites, 2 book chapters, and 2 books (master and PhD thesis). She was a researcher on several national and international projects with multidisciplinary teams. She presented several papers at national and international events and organized scientific events.
