Separar 2 - Public awareness and change of behaviour regarding selective collection of solid waste
Separar 2 - Public awareness and change of behaviour regarding selective collection of solid waste
In a second phase (June 2006 - November 2007), resulting from the application of the knowledge and experience acquired, an action model was developed to promote changes in behaviour - materialised in the Iniciativa EcoFreguesias 2007 - which comprehends 53 parishes (from the 4 municipalities involved) of AMTRES. This initiative, in addition to raising awareness, also includes the direct transmission of information and training together with the vitality of local agents with a view towards the introduction of long lasting separation habits.
The objectives of the Project SEPARA® have been defined on three levels: at the level of the separation targets (promote the increase in quantity and quality of the selective separation of MSW); at the level of knowledge the aim is to identify the social factors that contribute to the success (or non-success) of MSW policies; at the level of training and involvement of the population the results of the research were applied in terms of a community-based research, not in a merely instrumental fashion but in a way which would permit an increase in knowledge and the good separation practices of the populations.
At this level, it is important to highlight the development of the initiative EcoFreguesias 2007, which 35 Parich Councils adhered to and over 200 local entities that became involved in the separation of MSW. The results of the effective participation in the training actions clearly demonstrate that the Parish councils, in general, adhered in a very positive way to the initiative, with the active participation of the presidents of the Parish councils being noteworthy, for having been present in the actual training and demonstrated much commitment by inviting several local entities to participate.
It is also important to emphasize the pioneering and innovative character of this project, which simultaneously produces knowledge, disseminates information and mobilises citizens towards participation by raising their awareness of the environmental challenges that we face and fulfilling the modus operandis proposed by the Agenda 21 Local.
