The main objective of this course is to provide training in qualitative data analysis assisted by computer that guarantees a knowledge of the main tools and resources currently available, as well as the main trends in this area. A strong and diversified conceptual and epistemological component, will be combined with practical and operational training, which will allow participants to grasp the existing options and thus correctly direct their work. Particular emphasis will be given to content analysis as a methodological approach capable of dialoguing with a microinformatics tool to support the research and data analysis process.

In this course, there will be oportunity to carry out operations with the most common types or sources of data, including interviews, focus groups, images, tabulated data, legal diplomas, press collections, bibliographic references, audio or video files, or data from new sources of digital data, such as internet pages or social networks. Assisted practice activities will be combined with a wide range of support materials, including the provision of detailed tutorials for future reference.

In this elearning modality, the Moodle platform will be used to manage training content. The course will have 15 hours of contact, synchronous regime through videoconference platform. Teaching will be accompanied by materials duly adjusted to this format. Participants will be given the possibility to carry out a small qualitative data analysis project according to their research or professional interests. Such a project will be discussed during the afternoon sessions. Participants are guaranteed assistance in carrying out the proposed tasks. Obtaining ECTS is subject to the presentation of a final paper. The course is not subject to summative assessment.

Intended for

The course is aimed at high education students, teachers, researchers, senior managers, specialists in different areas (eg marketing, market research, human resources, opinion polls, etc.), who wish to obtain knowledge in terms of scientific research methodology in the analysis of qualitative data and that use it or intend to use applications for the analysis of qualitative data of different typology.

Day 1 | 10 am-1pm:
Epistemological and conceptual aspects of research using qualitative data, supporting resources

Activities / Contents
-Epistemology of qualitative data analysis;
-Objectives and fields of application;
-Stages of qualitative data analysis;
- Content analysis procedures
-Construction of analysis grids;
-Implications and particularities of using applications in the analysis of qualitative data;
- Qualitative data repositories;
-Tools for management and manipulation of qualitative data.

Day 2 | 10 am-1pm:
Introduction to MAXQDA and project file management

Activities / Contents
- Data collection with MAXApp (i.e. collection of text, image, audio and / or video);
-Interface, internal organization and information management in MAXQDA;
-Creation and management of project files;
-Creation of new documents and data insertion;
-Transcription of audio and / or video in MAXQDA;
-Preparation and import of documents;
-Importation of pre-processed documents (e.g. discussion groups or questionnaires);
-Importation of bibliographic data;
-Capture and import of Internet pages;
-Collection of Social Network data: Twitter and YouTube;
-Operations with tabulated data.

Day 3 | 10 am-1pm:
Data preparation, analysis and categorization

Activities / Contents
-Categorying and coding through analysis grid;
-Use of colors in the categorization of data and Emoticodes;
-Defining code favorites
-Coding by paraphrasing information
-Coding System Transformation
-Annotation tools and annotation management;
-Search for coded information
-Linking documents;
-Team work with MAXQDA;
-Data referencing in MAXQDA;
-Definition of variables, import and export.

Day 4 | 10 am-1pm:
Search, consult and define analysis criteria

Activities / Contents
-Search and retrieve information;
- Simple lexical searches and extended / complex searches;
- Activation by variable and activation by color;
- Transformation of codes into variables;
-Autocoding of data and results;
-Export and import of data;
-Comparison of groups;
Analysis summaries and grids;
-Graphics, statistics, quantitative information processing;

Day 5 | 10 am-1pm:
Report of findings and conclusions

Activities / Contents
-Extraction of tabulated information;
-Extraction of codebook;
-Visual tools: implementation and testing;
-Export of results;
- Predefined result tables;
- Content sharing and printing;

For personal project sessions (tutoring) - (in the afternoon, by appointment)

Activities / Contents
-Organization of participants into groups according to interests or research methodologies in use;
-The service will be done by registration and managed through the Moodle platform;
-Each student must submit a work proposal (i.e., research project);
- Individualized support for the implementation of research projects will be provided;
-Projects must be carried out using the empirical material of each participant;
- Advice and testing of specific features adjusted to the job in question;
-The confidentiality of all job offers is guaranteed.

Summary: 5 synchronous sessions, minimum 15 hours of contact. Obtaining the 3 ECTS is subject to the presentation of a final project in MAXQDA up to 7 days after the end of the course.


To attend the course, the candidate must be 18 years of age or older and fit the defined target audience. In case of filling all vacancies, candidates will be given preference for preparing theses or dissertations involving research projects related to the proposed themes. A good command of the English language is recommended for mastering the supporting bibliography. Internet access required.

Participants must use their own personal computer (Windows or Macintosh). Netbooks are not recommended.

Required software: MAXQDA (special conditions for all participants: temporary program licenses + promotional materials will be provided) + browser + application to use spreadsheets. Applications to be installed previously will be listed and the necessary instructions will be shared.

Language: Portuguese and / or English (if justified by the number of subscribers in a foreign language).
