Incentives, rewards and property rights

Françoise Benhamou ( Université de Paris - Centre d'Economie de Paris Nord) comes to ISCTE - Auditório Afonso de Barros to talk about creative and cultural workers benefiting from different sources of earnings. Among them, property rights play a twofold role. On the one hand, they bring incentives and rewards for creators. But on the second hand, they limit the scope of diffusion. After a short theoretical approach, this seminar will present the main issues of a survey conducted in France on the importance and role of property rights in the cultural industries.

Refining sociological accounts of taste: evidence from Britain

This presentation will review recent contributions to the sociology accounts of taste. It will describe some of the results of a recent major research project on cultural taste and participation in Britain, the findings from which were interpreted in critical dialogue with Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital. I will reflect on the theoretical lessons learned and their relevance for the sociology of cultural consumption.

Research Workshop - Religious pragmatics: Theoretical proposals, comparative case studies and their discussion

This workshop intends to tackle a recent disciplinary divide in the study of religion: that of cognitive vs. cultural-interpretive approaches to religion. This debate, ultimately, reveals the renewed urge to discuss issues of methodology and heuristics in social sciences. We propose to tackle this by exploring a theme that may incorporate both heuristics: the pragmatic dimensions of religious transmission. We suggest that this can be done through an investigation along three axes of religious action: discipline, aesthetics and imagination.
