Understanding the links between multilateralism and democracy to tackle global challenges more effectively
This project, developed by the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy (Geneva Graduate Institute) in partnership with the Kofi Annan Foundation between 2024 and 2026, seeks to deepen understanding of the links between multilateralism and democracy in the face of contemporary global challenges. Starting from the observation that international cooperation and multilateral action are increasingly hampered by polarisation, assertive nationalist agendas, and the erosion of shared normative frameworks, the project promotes dialogue, exchanges of good practices, training, and advocacy on the importance of democratic, ethical, and inclusive leadership.
The project organises a series of thematic roundtables with experts and multilateral actors on issues such as climate, technology, human rights, security, trade, and migration, and produces policy briefs and outcome documents designed to inform debate and support more effective responses to global challenges. Within this framework, Valerio Simoni was responsible for the theme “Democracy, multilateralism and migration”, conducting background research, authoring the related policy brief, participating in the thematic roundtable, and preparing its outcome document.
