Understanding the links between multilateralism and democracy to tackle global challenges more effectively

This project, developed by the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy (Geneva Graduate Institute) in partnership with the Kofi Annan Foundation between 2024 and 2026, seeks to deepen understanding of the links between multilateralism and democracy in the face of contemporary global challenges. Starting from the observation that international cooperation and multilateral action are increasingly hampered by polarisation, assertive nationalist agendas, and the erosion of shared normative frameworks, the project promotes dialogue, exchanges of good practices, training, and advocacy on the importance of democratic, ethical, and inclusive leadership.

The project organises a series of thematic roundtables with experts and multilateral actors on issues such as climate, technology, human rights, security, trade, and migration, and produces policy briefs and outcome documents designed to inform debate and support more effective responses to global challenges. Within this framework, Valerio Simoni was responsible for the theme “Democracy, multilateralism and migration”, conducting background research, authoring the related policy brief, participating in the thematic roundtable, and preparing its outcome document.

Objectivos:
The project aims to generate a deeper understanding of the relationship between democracy and multilateralism and to contribute to more effective responses to contemporary global challenges. More specifically, it seeks to foster informed and comparative reflection on how democratic, ethical, and inclusive leadership, together with accountability mechanisms and public trust, can strengthen international cooperation and the effectiveness of multilateral action. Its objectives include producing research-based policy documents; creating spaces for dialogue among experts, policymakers, and multilateral actors; strengthening the international circulation of good practices; and contributing to public debate on the simultaneous retreat of democracy and multilateralism. In Valerio Simoni’s specific contribution, the objective was to analyse the links between democracy, multilateralism, and migration through the production of a policy brief, participation in a thematic roundtable, and the drafting of the corresponding outcome document.
