Transnational Movement, Borders and Identities

This project brings together Brazilian and Portuguese scholars with shared interests in issues of transnationalism, identity and boundaries. The group includes a core of scholars who have been previously engaged in joint work around those themes and younger scholars who are new to the field. Previous moments and products of joint work include the seminars Nação e diáspora (UNICAMP, 1998, org. Bela Feldman-Bianco), Tensões coloniais e reconfigurações pós-coloniais (Arrábida, 1999, org. Bela Feldman-Bianco, Cristiana Bastos e Miguel Vale de Almeida), and Imperial Tensions in Post-colonial Times (Brown University, 2000, org. Cristiana Bastos) and the publications Colonialism as a continuing process (special issue of Identities,  2001) e Trânsitos Coloniais: Diálogos críticos luso-brasileiros (org. Cristiana Bastos, Miguel Vale de Almeida e Bela Feldman-Bianco, Lisboa, Imprensa das Ciências Sociais, 2002; Editora UNiCAMP, 2007) and several others.

Objectivos: 
To promote cross-analysis, comparative studies and international dialogue on topics involving transnationalism, migration, identity-building, cultural frontiers, political borders; to maintain a group of interlocutors in the field; to develop special symposia open to the wider academic community; to promote conceptual development on those topics in Portuguese-speaking journals; to publish a special issue gathering the contributions of the group in a prestigious journal (Horizontes Antropológicos) and in a edited volume.
State of the art: 
Com o intercâmbio agora proposto pretendemos continuar o alcance comparativo da interlocução já apontada e ampliar os contextos de estudo, ampliando também o leque de pesquisadores envolvidos em ambos os países. Como objectivo final pretendemos consolidar o trabalho teórico, ampliar a caracterização empírica dos contextos de língua portuguesa já abordados e expandi-los para fenómenos menos visíveis - novos migrantes, novas linhas de tráfico e trânsito, novos recortes de forasteiros/nacionais e novas dinâmicas de inclusão-exclusão.
