Youth: actor of social change

Youth: actor of social change

UP2YOUTH is an EU-funded research project concerned with the agency of young people in the context of social change. While their transitions to adulthood are structured by risk and uncertainty young men and women develop coping strategies which in turn affect social structures. This regards especially work, family and citizenship which are the key topics of UP2YOUTH. However, it depends on the scope of action that state policies provide them whether these strategies contribute both to social integration and for subjectively meaningful biographical perspectives.

Objectivos:

Addressing youth as actor of social change on the one hand implies to analyse under what conditions young people can be included in and exert full citizenship status. On the other hand, it means discarding a perspective according to which young people are merely affected by social change in a passive way but tries to identify to what extent they play an active role in these processes by reinforcing or modifying structures through individual coping strategies and life styles. Therefore, secondary and comparative analysis is carried out with regard to four main dimensions
across the three sub-themes.

1. Young parenthood as the question of gendered individualisation and the challenge of reproduction;
2. Transitions to work and the challenge of socio-economic and socio-cultural integration of ethnic minority youth;
3. Civic participation as the challenge of becoming an active citizen.
