International Social Survey Programme - 2007 Leisure Time and Sports

This project is part of the research programme "Portuguese Social Attitudes" coordinated by Manuel Villaverde Cabral and Jorge Vala.
This study carried out by ISSP 2007 aims to analyse attitudes and practices regarding leisure time and sports.
The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) is one of the first international research networks on comparative and longitudinal studies, carrying out annual questionnaires in more than 40 participating countries. The ISSP is an important knowledge infrastructure destined to support social sciences research projects. The main objectives of this research network are:
- to develop modules for the study of attitudes in different domains of social life, as well as an extensive group of sociodemographic variables;
- to produce comparative international data;
- to create longitudinal analysis instruments
- to provide data to the scientific community and public in general. The ISSP questionnaires are applied annually to a random probabilistic sample of the population, composed by those living in the country that are 18 years or older, regardless of their nationality or legal situation. The questionnaire is composed by two modules: a thematic module and a sociodemographic module, which includes sociodemographic characterisation variables, such as education, occupation, income, social class, political and religious participation. Portugal participates in this research network since 1997. Since then, the following studies have been carried out: ISSP 1997 - Work orientations (1st edition)
Cabral, MV, Vala, J & Freire, J. (Orgs.), (2000). Trabalho e cidadania. Lisboa: Imprensa de Ciências SociaisISSP 1998 - Religion
