EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEY 3

EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEY 3

This project is part of the research programme "Portuguese Social Attitudes" coordinated by Manuel Villaverde Cabral and Jorge Vala.

The European Social Survey 3 (ESS) corresponds to the third edition of a biannual project, which main objective is to study attitudes and values of Europeans within a comparative and longitudinal perspective. This project involves a research network of EU and non-EU countries. The ESS questionnaire is composed by a core module and two or three rotating modules. The core module aims to measure continuities and changes in the following domains: Media and interpersonal trust
Participation and socio-political values
Well-being, health and security, national, ethnical and religious identity
Sociodemographic characterisation
Social values The rotating modules of previous editions were:ESS 1 Immigration; Citizenship
ESS 2 Family and Work; Health and Caring Opinions; Economic Morality. ESS 3 rotating modules address the topics of Personal and Social Well-being and the Organisation of Life Course in Europe. The questionnaire is applied to a random probability sample of the population. The universe is composed by those living in the country that are 15 years or older, regardless of their nationality or legal situation. In order to guarantee comparability, the ESS uses two weighting procedures: one that corrects the errors that might occur during the selection process of respondents; and another that redimensions the country's sample according to its population. The ESS Portuguese team is a consortium between the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE). Jorge Vala is the National Coordinator. Manuel Villaverde Cabral and João Ferreira de Almeida represent the Portuguese team in the Scientific Advisory Board. Anália Torres and Alice Ramos are part of the executive board of the project, which is presided by Jorge Vala. The project also includes an Advisory Council composed by the following research centres: 1) Dinâmia - Research Centre on Socioeconomic Change of ISCTE; 2) CES - Centre for Social Studies of School of Economics of the University of Coimbra; 3) CIES - Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology; 4) CIS Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Social; 5) SOCIUS - Research Centre in Economic and Organisational Sociology; 6) Institute of Sociology - University of Porto. Currently, the main results of the project are being analysed.Within the first edition of the project, the book Contextos e Atitudes Sociais na Europa, organised by Jorge Vala and Anália Torres was published, as well as three volumes of a special issue on attitudes, values and social structures in Europe by the Portuguese Journal of Social Science (PJSS)Vala, J. & Torres, A. Objectivos:
The ESS 3 has the following specific objectives: Studying Personal and Social Well-being. This module seeks to evaluate the success of European countries at promoting the personal and social well-being of their citizens. Whilst much has been learnt from introducing subjective measures of global happiness or life satisfaction into survey research, significant recent progress in the development of high quality subjective measures of personal and social well-being is not being fully utilised, and should be systematically developed across Europe. The responsible team for analysing the results of this module is coordinated by Luísa Lima (ISCTE).Studying the Organisation of Life Course: Three main research topics are to be studied in the set of proposed questions: 1) to what extent do citizens perceive the life course as a structured sequence of life stages, and which events mark the transition from one stage to the other?; 2) do social norms concerning the life course exist, and if so, to what extent are these norms backed by sanctions?; 3) what are the expectations and capacities of citizens concerning life course planning? The responsible team for analysing the results of this module is coordinated by José Machado Pais and Vítor Sérgio Ferreira (ICS-UL)
