Tânia dos Reis Alves
Tânia Alves completed her PhD in Sociology (Sociology of Culture, Communication and Lifestyles) in 2018, at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (Institute of Social Sciences). Her thesis, entitled "1961 - Under the bias of the press. The Portuguese, British and French newspapers at the outbreak of war in the Portuguese empire", was unanimously approved with praise and distinction. She holds a master's degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies from ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon in 2012. She graduated in Journalism in 2010 from ESCS (Escola Superior de Comunicação Social - School of Social Communication) of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon.
She is currently working on the post-doctoral research project "Portugal-Goa-India in the eyes of the press. Dynamics, Continuities and Ruptures in a Colonial and Postcolonial Context".
Winner of two research grants from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT): a mixed PhD grant, combining research work in Portugal and abroad; and a grant for an international research project. Winner of an Oriente Foundation research grant.
Author of the book "1961 under the bias of the press", of academic articles and book chapters and co-organiser of the book "Salazar, o Estado Novo e os Media".
Member of a research team on Media and the Portuguese Colonial Empire, in interaction with international institutions and researchers, which resulted in an international conference and the publication of an international book.
She works in the field of Sociology with a focus on the influence of the media on society and History and cross-references with a wide range of theoretical approaches including Media and Communication, Colonial and Post-Colonial Studies and International Relations Studies.
The main objectives of her research are: to contribute to a new understanding of the relationship between media and imperialism, focussing on the interactions between communication, politics, society, culture and national identities; to explore the social role of the media at different socio-historical moments, not only as means of representation, but also as contestation, from an interdisciplinary approach; to allow a new vision of the articulation and tensions between different entities, institutions and groups that participated in the establishment, maintenance and fall of the modern Portuguese colonial empire; to understand the complex ways in which modern empires and communication influenced each other; to extend this field of research in a way that includes a deeper commitment to post-colonial studies.

Esta investigação analisa os processos discursivos e os mapas de significação e de sentido veiculados pela imprensa portuguesa sobre a guerra colonial, entre 1961 e 1974. Sob um contexto de censura sistemática, pretende-se avaliar o papel que este medium jogou na inculcação da ideologia imperial portuguesa e o modo como tratou alguns episódios cruciais da guerra colonial.
