Fabio Bertoni
Fabio Bertoni is a junior researcher at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa. He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Padova, Italy (2018). He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Cagliari (2020-2022) and, during this period, he taught General Sociology in the Communication Sciences course at the University of Cagliari (aa 20/21; 21/22), and Focus Group at the University of Padova (aa 22/23).
The current project (CEEC FCT...) is entitled "Visualising urban normativity: a sensory ethnography of visual impairment" and is based on understanding the relationship between visual impairment, the construction of the ableist norm and urban space. The main objectives of the research are to reconstruct the devices with which the city actively participates in defining disability for people who do not see/ see differently from the norm; the geographies and living spaces for people with a visual impairment; the intersections between disability, class, race, gender, urban stigma; and the role of social policies, social assistance and volunteering in this framework.
His previous work has centred on urban and youth cultures, the relationship between young people and urban spaces, forms of leisure and artistic practices, youth conflicts and nightlife. Another important aspect of his research concerns the relationship between urban spaces and securitisation/social control policies. Fil rouge of all his work is the relationship between the body and the city.
The research methods he favours are qualitative, ethnographic and visual.
Fabio Bertoni is a member of the ICS Diversities and SHIFT research groups; he participates in the activities of the Urban Transition Hub.
