ABOUT CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES, THEIR LEGACIES AND CHALLENGES   PROGRAMMES DIRECTLY LINKED WITH RESEARCH   DISSEMINATION OF KNOWLEDGE TO SOCIETY

The ICS-ULisboa (Instituto de Ciências Sociais of the Universidade de Lisboa) is a university institution devoted to research and advanced training in social sciences. For decades a symbol of interdisciplinarity and scientific innovation, ICS-ULisboa is one of the oldest Portuguese research institutes, today with a tripartite identity. It is one of the 18 organic units of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), an R&D unit and an Associate Laboratory (since 2002; status renewed until 2030) in the Portuguese S&T system.Additionally, ICS-ULisboa offers a strong programme of advanced research-led postgraduate education.

ICS-ULisboa's mission is to generate innovative research of international standing and global significance on the multifaceted challenges of our contemporary world, engaging with the global intersections of Lusophone, European, African, Latin American and Asian societies.

The FCT international panels (1996, 1999, 2005, 2008, 2014 and 2019) have repeatedly awarded the ICS-ULisboa the Excellent rating. These assessments have stimulated increasingly innovative research, the search for high-quality postgraduate education and increasing attention to knowledge transfer.

ICS-ULisboa is organized into seven Research Groups (RGs) that contribute to knowledge production and societal impact within the framework of four Thematic Lines (TLs): Inclusion and Vulnerabilities (IVTL); Citizenship (CTL), Sustainability (STL) and Memory and Legacies (MLTL).
