As an external element to ICS, can I attend the Library?
Yes, all outside people have access to the ICS Library, the consultation of their funds and electronic resources.
Is it possible to do group work or meetings in the Library?
No, given the space available there is no such possibility.
Does the Library provide loans to external users?
No. But external users have access to a local query of all available funds and databases.
Can I make photocopies as an external user?
Yes, the Library has a machine and copies are made on a self-service basis and paid at the service counter.
Does the library have an ATM?
No, however, and in case of a high amount, you can use the existing ATM in the ICS bookstore.
As an external user, can I access articles?
Yes. You can consult all the bases and accesses available on the computers of the Library and download to a pen or send to your personal mail what interests you. You can even bring your own laptop.
Does the Library provide articles to external users?
Yes, if the article you want is part of the databases that the Library signs, you can request the email address email@example.com, and the request will be satisfied as soon as possible without costs.
As an external user can I access wi-fi?
Yes. If you are a student of another University, access through the Eduroam network with your credentials. Otherwise, you can access via ICS / Guest.

How do I know if the Library has a certain book(s)?
The documentary fund of the ICS Library is searchable via the web, from the bibliographic catalogue, a system that allows knowing in real time if the Library has what is intended, or if the work (s) is in any of the UL Libraries since it is the joint catalogue. It also allows you to see if the book is available or requested if you submit a return date.
What databases are available in the Library?
The Library subscribes to a number of databases, either individually or in a consortium. You can view all available resources at https://www.ics.ulisboa.pt/biblioteca/pesquisa.
How do I know if the Library subscribes to a particular magazine?
You should do the research by the title of the publication through the link:
If there is access, online, you will have access to the respective links. If access is on paper, you will have access to the journal's history through the indication ICS Library.
How can I find out if the Library has an e-book?
You should do the research through the catalog:

You can also do searches through the various e-book databases.
How can I access ICS scientific output?
You should do the research through the UL Repository, which provides information on all scientific production, and its availability of access http://repositorio.ul.pt/
Why can not I access some documents available in the UL Repository?
Although all scientific production is a compulsory deposit, it does not mean free access, since it may be subject to embargo or non-authorization deadlines. You can ask the author to send a copy by electronic mail through the "Request copy to the author" feature.
Can I access bibliographic databases from home?
If you are an external user, you will not have access to resources outside of ICS because they are paid access to resources, and licensed to ICS.
Internal users can access remotely via VPN and/or Web VPN.
Why am I not getting remote access?
Use of this service requires authentication. Your credentials are provided to you when your ICS membership card is inserted internally. In case of having difficulty using the service, you should contact the ICS IT service.
How can I request a book from the Library?
The Library only makes home loans to internal users, researchers and students.
A user form is always created at the reference desk without which a home loan cannot be carried out.
Can I request a book from the Library and have it collected by a third party?
Yes. As long as you have a user record and the Library has been notified in advance, via e-mail or telephone.
Can I request a book from the Library as a student at another UL school?
No. You can, however, make a request for an EIB (Inter Library Loan) at the respective school's Library, which in turn makes the request to the ICS Library.
What works can I request?
The Library only does not lend theses, periodicals and reference works. Everything else can be borrowed.
What is the number of works I can request and loan terms that I have?
Depending on the user's status, the number of books and loan deadlines are determined. Find out more here.
Can I make renewal requests via email?
Yes, renewal is permitted. Just send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Can I renew my loans if the delivery deadline has passed?
Yes. If the delay is no more than two weeks and there are no refund requests from the Library.
Can I request a book reservation via email?
Yes. The book will be reserved at the reference desk for 3 days.
Can I request a reservation for a book that is on loan?
Yes, if the book is outside the return deadline, the Library will request its return. You will be notified via email as soon as it is available.
What should I do if I receive a return request from the Library?
Immediately return the missing book, which is needed by another user. Please note that the library only processes return requests whenever they are beyond the return deadline.
To return a book do I have to go to the Library?
Not necessarily. The Library accepts returns via CTT.
The book(s) can also be left in the Locker outside Library hours, located on floor 0.
Can I return a book through third parties?
Yes. Anyone can return books.
Who can process bibliography acquisition requests?
Only ICS research staff and students can place orders to purchase bibliography. The request must be made using the form, accessible through the Library page.
How long can a procurement order take?
Typically about a month. This is if it is a recent work in English. In other languages or out-of-print books, the waiting time may be longer.
When I place a purchase order, can I choose between an e-book and paper version?
Yes, both versions are included in the bibliography acquisition form.
How do I have access to a book I ordered in an e-book version?
As soon as available by the supplier, the Library sends the respective link to the proponent. The same link is also available via the bibliographic catalog and EDS.
Can I track the status of my purchase order?
No. Just ask the Library about the status of the request.
How do I know that my purchase order has been satisfied?
As soon as the book(s) arrive at the Library and after being processed, the proposer receives an alert email about availability for request.
Can a purchase order not be satisfied?
Yes, if the book(s) are not available at all or on the used market. The proponent receives information about the situation.
Does the Library present its space and resources?
Yes. At the beginning of each academic year, the library promotes presentation sessions about its services and resources.
Does the Library organize training sessions on how to use existing resources?
Yes. By appointment via the email address Biblioteca@ics.ul.pt, the Library schedules training actions to support the community for bibliographic research in the catalogue, and the EDS search engine, as well as in subscribed databases and in bibliographic management software (Mendeley and Zotero). It also provides clarification on: where to publish, publishers and quartiles, through the work developed with the Web of Knowledge, Scopus and Capes platforms.
How to create an research profile?
The Library supports the creation and management of Orcid and Google Scholar research profiles. By appointment using the email address email@example.com
Does the Library publish all ICS scientific production?
Yes. Through monthly sending to the ICS Communication Section, publications received at the Library are disseminated through the ICS PUBLICAÇÕES newsletter.
Does the Library promote news?
Yes. By sending the ICS NEWSLETTER monthly to the ICS communication section, the ICS BIBLIOGRAPHIC NEWSLETTER is disseminated. There is also the dissemination of new features in the Library's interior and exterior windows. The Library also feeds its Facebook page with news: https://www.facebook.com/biblioteca.icsul.
